Three 60D, 85D and P85D variants are available, “You can dynamically shift the power from front to rear and very quickly adjust torque,” Tesla boss Elon Musk pointed out. “That’s more than is possible than with a mechanical system we can be constantly at the most efficient point for the individual motors so literally everything improves we even overcome the weight penalty.”
The 60D’s electric motors produce a combined 246 kW and 246Nm to ensure it is capable of 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds, 200km/h flat out and a range of 405 km, while the 85D manages 5.2 seconds to 100, 250 km/h, and 465 km range.
The significantly more powerful P85D has 165 kW 332 Nm front and 350 kW 602 Nm rear motors for a net output of 515 kW and 934 Nm for supercar like 3.2-second 0-100km/h sprint figures and an 11.8 second standing quarter mile acceleration. That’s as quick as a Ferrari 458 Speciale and is in part thanks to electric motors being able to produce maximum torque from zero rpm.
Tesla also unveiled a semi-autonomous Model S that employs myriad cameras and sensors to enable the car to change lanes of its own accord when a driver indicates and regulates its speed according to the signposted limits, as well as being able to self-park and perform emergency stops.
