Mitsubishi PHEV-S

The Mitsubishi evo is dead, company chiefs have confirmed, but its spirit will live on as a high performance hybrid SUV.once the Japanese car maker’s most iconic model, the evo’s future has been the subject of much internal debate for a number of years.

Speaking at the Paris show, product boss Kanenori okamoto confirmed that an evo XI was not part of Mitsubishi’s future plans. “It will not exist as we know it,” he said. “It will be replaced in spirit by an SUV with high performance. ”the firm previewed a sporty SUV with its outlander PHeV-S at the Paris show, although okamoto said it is yet to be decided what model the new SUV would be based on.

the evo-inspired SUV, which would need a large battery and high output electric motor to produce performance car characteristics, will use tech inspired by the electric i-MieV evolution Pikes Peak racer. It will make use of the latest evolution of the Super All Wheel control (S-AWc) four-wheel drive system originally developed for the evo X and integrated into the racer.

okamoto said technology pioneered in the new SUV would trickle down into future road cars. Mitsubishi UK boss Lance bradley was confident that green technology could excite on the road. “Green is still fun to drive,” he said. “It’s a challenge to make it fun, but not a particularly difficult one.”

Mitsubishi’s range will grow over the next five years to include an electric or plug-in hybrid electric version of every model, according to bradley. Next year the firm will launch a new pick-up truck, while a second-generation ASX crossover, which will include a plug-in hybrid version, is due in 2016. An all-electric Mirage is also planned.
