Mazda MX-5

Pulling the covers off at simultaneous events in Japan, the USA and at Mazda's new 'events venue' at Barcelona in Spain Mazda unveiled its latest version of the ever popular two-seat MX-5. On first glance the new roadster has striking new styling, with sharp headlights and a huge front grille perfect for a front mounted intercooler if you ask us.

These are the first photos Mazda has released, and the press release attached to them is full of the usual flannel. Apparently the styling ‘features a distinctive adaptation of the KODO Soul of Motion design,’ while the new car enhances the ‘Jinba Ittai; rider and horse as one.’ We'll leave you to consider if this a deep-meaning Japanese ideology or a cynical marketing ploy. Either way, the car definitely looks in motion standing still, and has a few features that mean it should be the most agile and stable MX-5 yet.

For a start the new car, which will go on sale in Europe in 2015, will be 100 kg lighter than the outgoing model. Couple that to the fact it will also have the lowest centre-of-gravity of any MX-5 before it, and we're already looking forward to getting behind the wheel. The engine and gearbox must be mounted very low in the car to achieve this, suggesting Mazda has been paying attention to
what Subaru and Toyota have done with the BRZ and GT 86.

The new car will have new technology too; the first rear wheel drive version of the SKYACTIV-Chassis and a choice of SKYACTIV-G tuned petrol engines. The reveal of the new car marked the 25th anniversary of the MX-5, arguably the most popular roadster ever made. That's a long time in car terms. We decided to pay tribute by looking through the JP archives and picking out our fave roadsters of years gone by.
