Mercedes E-Class
IN estate guise, the previous generation E-Class builds on the saloon's comfort and adds space. The smooth ride, well insulated interior and decent standard kit mean it's the most refined choice here, while the wide, deep boot i s massive at nearly 700 litres.
The Mercedes also scores with an easily adjusted driving position, first-rate cabin materials and strong kerb appeal. That said, it's starting to feel its age both inside and out. The emphasis on a relaxing drive means the big exec is a little dull. It's no slouch but a bit sloppy through corners. Other estates are undoubtedly more engaging and precise.
Reliability has also proven something of an issue for the E·Class, particularly for older models, although problems tend to be relatively minor and there's no faulting the impressive occupant safety record.
For bang on your £4,000 budget, we found a 2004 E220 CDI that had done just under 150,000 miles.
