DATSUN 280ZX
The second-generation of the Z series of coups followed in 1978 with the introduction of the 280ZX, and we first reported on Datsun’s intentions to import it to South Africa in the January 1980 issue.
Exactly one year later, we were even happier to report that local production at the Rosslyn plant had started and that the local content was as much as 40%. After researching dusty old issues of CAR, I found a special report on Datsun that stated that 250 examples of the 280ZX were imported before local production began.
Discrepancies exist regarding power outputs. Although our 1981 road test claimed the power output as 94 kW, later sources of info listed output figures from the L28 inline six at 107 kW at 5 200 r/min and 200 N.m at 4 000 r/min (some even say 220 N.m).
Transmissions were a five-speed manual or a three-speed Jatco automatic. Fuel injection replaced the predecessor’s Hitachi SUs. The hatchback configuration is excellent for versatile luggage space and, although the ZX looks like a two-seater, the useable rear seats make it a true 2+2.
Some models had removable targa tops fitted and a turbo version was launched in 1981 that upped power to 130 kW and 275 N.m (again, some records show 147 kW and 314 N.m). The pistons in the turbo were dished instead of flat-topped to drop the compression ratio.
WHICH ONE TO GET
Originality should be top of your shopping list, but tastefully modified examples are also sought after. Manual versions and turbocharged cars may command higher prices than the naturally aspirated autos. Some enthusiasts purchase tatty examples for restoration projects.
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR
Cars that have been heavily modified or raced are best avoided. Check that window glass, badges and trim are in a good state, as replacement items will be difficult to source.
Fuel consumption should be around 12,6 litres/100 km on the automatic model a high figure by today’s standards but the tank is surprisingly large at 80 litres, so a driving range of over 500 km is possible. Rust can be a problem along the doors and sills. The cooling system can lose efficiency, something confirmed by a colleague at sister magazine Getaway who runs a manual 280ZX, so have the radiator cleaned out and thermostat and rubber hoses scrubbed or replaced. Some owners plumb aftermarket oil coolers into the system to drop temperatures in our hot climate.
